How to Choose Exterior Paint Colors for Your House

Choosing an exterior paint color is one of the biggest visual decisions you will make for your home. The right palette can boost curb appeal, highlight architectural details, and even influence how large or small your home appears from the street. Here is the process we recommend to our clients across Middle Tennessee.

1. Start with the fixed elements

Your roof, stonework, brick, and driveway are not changing color. Pull your palette from those materials first. A roof with warm brown tones pairs naturally with cream, beige, or warm gray siding; a cool gray roof leans toward blues and true grays.

2. Consider the architectural style

• Traditional and colonial homes look best in classic whites, creams, and soft grays with crisp trim.
• Craftsman and bungalow homes shine with earthy tones — sage, olive, deep red, and warm taupe.
• Modern homes can carry bold statements: charcoal, black, or a single saturated accent wall.

3. Test before you commit

Paint always looks different on a large surface than on a chip. Buy small samples, paint two-foot squares on different sides of the house, and check them at morning, noon, and dusk. Tennessee sun is strong — colors fade faster here, so ask for UV-resistant, premium exterior formulas.

4. Don’t forget the trim

Trim is the frame of your house. White or off-white trim is timeless, but a contrasting dark trim on light siding is a current favorite. Keep the number of colors to three: body, trim, and one accent for doors and shutters.
